Abstract | New construction technologies advocate longer spans and thinner decks for floors. These are conditions that can lead to excessive floor vibrations. A floor has natural vibrations, say 2 Hz. When a rhythmic activity on or near the floor approaches that vibration or a multiple of it, the floor starts to vibrate. This situation can be alleviated by increasing the rate at which a floor absorbs vibration energy, stiffening the floor by increasing the floor member depth, or putting soft springs under vibration-inducing machinery. The implementation of remedial measures depends somewhat on the floor construction. |
