AbstractA research project is being conducted at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to evaluate the effectiveness in a road tunnel of the current emergency ventilation system (EVS) to control smoke spread in the event of a fire. The research study includes two phases: namely, a numerical and an experimental phase. The numerical phase uses the Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS)[1] Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study smoke ventilation in the tunnel. The experimental phase is used to calibrate and partially verify the CFD model and to provide the necessary initial and boundary conditions. The results of the numerical analyses indicated that the phenomenon of ?backlayering? did not occur in all simulated cases. The backlayering phenomenon is the case where the smoke moves against the provided ventilation upstream of the fire causing a dangerous environment to the tunnel users. Therefore, the current ventilation scenarios and side vent openings are deemed appropriate with regards to preventing the occurrence of backlayering.
