AbstractThe National Reseach Council conducted a 3-centimeter radar propagation experiment over Lake Ontario during 1951 and 1952. The radar was moved continuously between points 8 and 220 feet above the lake surface, and photographs of the PPI oscilloscope were taken at 8-foot intervals of vertical travel. Radar ranges beyond the horizon were observed very frequently during the summer months - on more than half the observations. On the other hand, no evidence of extended range performance was observed during the winter. Most of the occasions when abnormal ranges occurred were the result of trapping of the electomagnetic wave in an atmosphere duct close to the lake surface. On these occasions the greatest range was obtained with the radar less than 100 feet above the lake surface. There was a marked maximum in the occurance of these surface ducts in the afternoon, and it generally was observed that they occur when the air temperature exceeds the water temperature. The presence of rain on the propagation path reduced the frequency of occurrence of extended ranges by, at least, a factor of three.
