AbstractNatural exposure tests of different coatings applied to several types of wood substrates are described. Results are compared by estimating the number of years for the finish to reach the repaint condition. Horizontal siding and cedar shingles were found to be the better wood substrates for painting. Plywood was the most difficult to paint satisfactorily. An alkyd enamel gave the best over-all performance followed by an isophthalic finish. White lead in oil and white lead plus zinc oxide paints were very poor on most surfaces. The results indicate that the use of alkyd finishes on exterior wood should receive more consideration.
