Abstract | It has long been realized that corrosion of concrete is of considerable economic importance. In various countries extensive studies of chemical attack on this material have been carried out. The great bulk of this research has concerned itself with the problem of sulphate attack on concrete, doubtless because in practice the most common cause of chemical deterioration is by sulphates. Very little detailed information is available on the corrosion of portland cement products by acide - and in particular by acidic bog waters -- possibly because it is automatically assumed that most acids do attack portland cement. However it should be borne in mind that the quality of the concrete and the nature of its ingredients affect its vulnerability to acid corrosion. |
