Abstract | Several brickwork piers were erected at the Division's exposure site in Ottawa in 1959. Flaking of the mortar from the joints of one of the piers was observed shortly after the pier was constructed. Three years later the trouble had progressed from slight surface spalling of the mortar to severe cracking of the joints. The same mortar was used in a pier built of a different brick but it has not suffered decay, and its performance is considered satisfactory. |
